It has been the biggest poker game in professional circles since the 1970s but it was not until the online poker explosion in 2004 that Holdem became the biggest poker game played by common people.
Holdem is a very elegant game sporting what many considers the perfect balance between skill and chance. The majority of cards are community cards, shared by all players, and therefore dealt face up on the table. The community cards give a player a lot of information but nowhere near enough to make the game predictable. Each and every player holds two cards that nobody else can see and this balance between the known and the unknown is what lies at the core of Texas Holdem. Another vital element of the game is the hand itself which is not complete right from the start. It is dealt in a step by step process in conjunction with betting rounds. To stay in the hand long enough to wield your final hand you must bet money. Another wonderful element of Texas Holdem is the vexing nature of the community cards. They could, and frequenty will, give your opponent a stronger hand than they give you even if they form a high ranking hand with your pocket cards. The community cards are two edged swords that can strike in either direction. All in all, this results in a very enjoyable game. One in which a splendid alchemy of psychology, probability and chance affect the outcome.
